BJP fell just 10 MLA seats short of the magic figure and had to lose out on the chance of forming the government in Karnataka. HD Kumaraswamy took charge as the chief minister of the state with support from Congress party, after a 2 day-CM stint from Yeddyurappa.
On a contemporary note, by-elections are being held at Jayanagara constituency, after the sudden death of BJP sitting MLA, Vijay Kumar. Vijay’s brother, Prahlad got the ticket from BJP while the daughter of the Ex-Home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, Soumya Reddy is contesting on Congress ticket. As expected, JDS pledged its support to Congress party leader and withdrew from contention.
It is a common trend in politics that the family member of the deceased MLA wins by a good margin as the sympathy factor works in their favor. However, that is not the case with Jayanagara constituency as Soumya has attained a lead of over 13,000 and is all set to conquer the MLA seat. It needs to be said that even sympathy factor does not save BJP in Jayanagara constituency.
