Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest outing, Kaala has been in news for the past few weeks for various reasons. Directed by Pa.Ranjith, the film has finally hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Kaala(Rajinikanth) a leader for the people in Dharavi slums will solve all the conflict problems between them and keeps united. On the other hand, Nana Patekar(Hari Dada) a political leader wants to occupy Dharavi and convert it into a commercial venture. This the time where the conflict raises between Kaala and Hari Dada. What kind of trails will Hari Dada do to occupy Dharavi? How will Kaala oppose him and stand for his people? To know this, you have to watch the film in theaters.

Undoubtedly, Rajinikanth is a major plus for the film. His screen presence, dialogue delivery and intense acting will bring a lot of depth to the proceedings and make the audience to stick to their seats. If not Rajini no one would have done justice to the role of Kaala. Coming to direction, Pa.Ranjith has come up with a simple storyline but narrated the proceedings with some engaging scenes here and there. Especially, the pre-interval fight followed by intensified interval block are executed superbly. The pace of the film drops a bit in the latter half and looks dragged in parts. The entire setup of Dharavi slum and problems over there are showcased well but everyone may not like the overdosed mass and rustic narration. Nana Patekar, Huma Qureshi and Eeshwari performed decently in their given roles.

Plus Points:

Rajinikanth’s screen presence and his charisma

Cinematography, background score

Set work

Action episodes in the first half

Minus Points:

Ages old storyline

Slow paced and dragged second half

May not appeal to everyone.

All in all, Kaala is a regular action drama which exposes the common man’s problems in Dharavi slum. Though Rajini’s acting and his dialogue delivery are treat to watch and remind us of vintage Superstar, lack of strong storyline and a slow-paced second half may not appeal to the larger section of the audience. Watch it if like hero-oriented films because Kaala is nothing but Rajini’s one-man show. Rating : 3/5
