Legendary Kannada playwright, actor and filmmaker Girish Karnad has passed away on Monday morning at his Bengaluru residence. Girish was 81. He breathed his last after suffering from prolonged illness. Celebrities from the Indian film and theatre world have expressed grief over Girish’s demise.
Girish was born in Matheran, Maharashtra, on 19 May, 1938. He was well-known for his iconic plays such as Tuglaq and Hagavadana. He was popular among Telugu audiences for his movies such as Komaram Puli, Shankar Dada MBBS and Dharma Chakran etc. He was the recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
