In the 15th century, Babur, a Mughal invader, had constructed a mosque in place of a Ram temple that was already existing there. Ever since then, there have been many cultural and social clashes between Muslims and Hindus, over the ownership of this land.
In 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished and preparations were also made to construct a Ram Temple in that place. However, this did not go through back then. Last year, the Supreme Court, a decades of legal battle, gave its verdict, giving the land to Hindus, for the construction of Ram Mandir. It also compensated the Muslim community by giving them acres of land elsewhere, for the construction of a mosque.
